Abstract

Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty (PHADP) is a non-profit 501(C)(3) non-denominational religious organization founded and run by people on Alabama’s death row. PHADP’s mission is to work together with friends and other supporters to educate the public and to bring about the abolition of the death penalty in Alabama. The Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty Papers are part of the University of North Alabama’s library archive.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The archive contains articles of organization, letters, news articles and press, photographs, creative writing, legal documents, moratorium papers, letters from murder victims’ family and loved ones, death certificates, three-dimensional memorabilia, artwork.

Biographical Note

Archive materials were originally in the possession of Executive Director Esther Brown of Lanett, Alabama and the PHADP board members on death row at William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama. The organization chose to donate their materials in order for the archive to serve as a permanent memorial for the group and its members, a learning tool for the public, and a record of the history of the death penalty in Alabama.
